Harbourfront Centre in Toronto

(Marketing Coordinator) 1999 to 2000

Organization

For more than 30 years, Harbourfront Centre in Toronto has been on the cutting edge of all that is current and creative, bringing together the best in both Canadian culture and the rich mosaic of cultures from within Canada and around the world all within a collection of distinctive venues in the heart of Toronto's downtown waterfront.

Objective

The Centre hired Ms. Woods to lead marketing efforts for its ethnic community festivals which included managing the production and distribution of the marketing collateral and advertising budget ($100K).

Approach

Woods’ main goal was to increase overall attendance to all the community festivals with particular emphasis on the Black community (predominantly Caribbean/African) population. She researched the events in that community and attended several key events, where she spoke briefly and also distributed marketing collateral. She also initiated advertising in several new publications in that community.

Results

  • Increased the attendance numbers to all festivals.
  • Played an integral role in obtaining Iman Cosmetics as the first sponsor for Harbourfront’s 2000 Kuumba Festival.

During her tenure at Harbourfront Centre, Cherrie Woods was a very effective Marketing Coordinator with great interpersonal skills. Her organizational skills were exceptional and she was very committed and had a clear understanding of the importance of publicity and marketing to the Centre." – Bruce Hutchinson, former Director of Media Relations and Marketing, Harbourfront Centre
